Are you worried about the level of your alcohol intake? When times are stressful, it can be easy to rely on alcohol, but it won’t help you in the long-term. Here are the steps to take to help you cut down.
Keep a Drinking Diary
For a month or so, you should try keeping a diary of how much you drink. This allows you to see how much you normally drink, and you can then work out how much less you need to drink in future. You can set goals and make sure you drink less than the recommended drinking limit. You can carry on the drinking diary for longer if you think it will help you to stick to your plans and reach your goals. It’s definitely a good way of making you think about how much you’re drinking.
Resist Peer Pressure
It can be hard to say no to people when they offer you a drink or ask if you want to go out to a bar. But you should learn to politely turn down these offers so that you don’t drink more than you should. If you’re one of those people who can’t have just one drink without having five more afterwards, you should avoid these situations as much as possible. You don’t want to stop going out completely but try to cut down the amount of social drinking you do. You can go out without getting drunk!
Don’t Have Alcohol in the Home
This step is a very logical one to take. If there’s no alcohol in your home, then it becomes a lot easier to drink less. To get a drink, you’d have to go to the shop or find a bar. But unless you’re already deeply addicted, you probably won’t want to take the time out of your day to do that. It stops you taking the easy option and forces you to think twice about whether or not you really should be drinking. And that can only be a good thing.
One of the biggest reasons why people drink is boredom. When you have nothing to do, it can be very easy to pour yourself a glass of wine and then another and another. This is why drinking is becoming such a big problem for people entering retirement. Unless you keep yourself busy, the temptation to reach for the bottle will always be there. So, next time you’re bored and think about having a drink, think again. Instead, you could go for a walk or call a friend and meet up with them.
Know When to Get Professional Help
If the steps above don’t help you, and you find it impossible to cut down how much you’re drinking, you might have a serious problem. When you reach this point, it’s time to find some professional help and advice. See your doctor and ask them what the next step is. They might send you to rehab like the Beachway Therapy Center. This will help you detox and stop relying on drink. Once you’ve been through the rehab process, you’ll have to stay strong and resist the temptation to drink again.
Drinking doesn’t have to become a problem for most people though. If you focus on how much you’re drinking and keep it within your control, you’ll be fine.
