Stop ruminating…

Rumination, or compulsive thinking, about what might have been or what could have happened can often lead to depression. Holding a grudge and letting it control your thoughts, or constantly thinking about a missed opportunity, can take control of your life. 

Rumination is different from worrying. When you worry you are concerned about things that might happen. When you compulsively ruminate it is typically about something that has come and gone. It’s like water under the bridge or spilled milk. There is nothing that can be done except learn from the lesson and move on.

The best way to break the cycle of ruminating is to address the problem out loud to a trusted friend or therapist. Hearing the problem out loud can often put a different light on the subject. Don’t let ruminating control your life. And if you do feel it is leading to depression do not be afraid to seek help.
