A Simple Analogy
Depression is like a mosquito’s bite. Depressor (a factor that causes depression) is like a mosquito.
Depression is like a mosquito’s bite. We don’t want to be bitten by a mosquito, we are scared of the disease or virus it may cause us, comparing the depression to it, we also wouldn’t want to be beaten by depression and we are so scared of the implication of being depressed. A mosquito sucking our blood is like a depressor sucking our inner motivation, happiness, our will to go on with the challenges and sucking our energy.
We do many things just to avoid the mosquito bites, we apply insect repellent, spray insecticides and so on. Oh yes, mosquito bites are itchy, uncomfortable, can cause wounds and scars. Depression also is the same, uncomfortable, irritating, can cause wound and scars emotionally.
Insect repellent is compared to things that will make us happy to forget about the current feeling of depression. However like the insect repellent it lasts only for hours. We may feel relieved only for a matter of few hours. Not bad to temporary happiness and relief.
We also spray insecticides so mosquitoes would die. Yes, we try to avoid those things or words that will make us more depressed. We try to see things in a different perspective, like the spray it kills some deterrent that will make us depressed, but hey not forever right but for the meantime.
To avoid the mosquito’s bites the best solution is to clean the surrounding and remove all areas that will be the breeding place of mosquitoes. This is same with the depression. The best solution is to clean our mind and remove the clutter pieces in our inner self that might be a breeding place of the seed of depression.
Cleaning the surrounding is not easy I know, there are several factors such as wind, rain and sun that will make the area unclean again. It takes time to make sure that the area is spic and span and clutter free. Phew, like our inner self, it takes time to remove the dirt brought about by events, situation, issues, beliefs, philosophy, and other people . We can’t shoo them away they are part of life. Solution? Just keep cleaning that’s it. It doesn’t guarantee that we will have mosquito free lives and will not be bitten by it. Like depression we can’t guarantee that it will go just like that. It is just a matter of acceptance that depression is a part of our lives and it is there to make us human.
If Depression = mosquito’s bites therefore a depressor (factor causing someone to be depressed) = mosquito.
So what do we do if the mosquito lands on our skin, we either brush it away or we hit it hard until it dies, don’t we?
So what should we do if a depressor lands on us?
***Note: A friend corrected me, she said “depressor” is the better word than depressant. ****
