How to Be Smart Consumers

Shopping online can be a great experience for many. For some, however, it can be a nightmare. It can be due to many reasons – failure to deliver products, bad after-sales service, bad product quality and others.

When you buy from an online store, you would want to be sure that the business is really credible and reliable. There are few ways to do this:

BBB Rating

BBB stands for Better Business Bureau. It’s basically an organization that aims to provide consumers with information about the standing and reputation of businesses. Based on certain criteria and regulations, BBB gives ratings and accreditation to businesses. Not all businesses are affiliated with BBB. If you want to check the rating of a particular company, you can do so by visiting the BBB website.

Customer Review/Feedback

Reading customer reviews on websites such as Epinions.com or Consumerreports.org can also be a good way to find out about the credibility of a certain company. You might find both positive and negative reviews, and this is pretty common. However, it helps to give you a general impression about the company’s reputation in the eyes of its customers.

Social Media Presence

Social media is a platform that have been utilized by many companies to communicate with their customers and potential customers. A good company would usually have a strong social media presence, which is normally indicated by the number of followers as well as how regular they post updates and interact with their followers. The comments given by customers on the company’s social media pages can also indicate their credibility and reputation.

Let’s all aim to be smart consumers and make sure to always do our research before making online purchases. Happy shopping!

  1. Not all countries have BBB. Although we have a DTI here in the Philippines it is just swamped with so many tasks that tracking customer complaints can be irritating for the consumer. I always tell people to assert their rights as consumers so that they will not be shortchanged by businesses.

    • Yes that is true, that’s why I mentioned that not all businesses are affiliated with BBB. You’re right, consumers need to educate themselves better to avoid falling into traps and scams that are quite pervasive these days.

  2. yes, I think this is right it is very important to know what kind of products and services before getting into the business. In fact reviews are really helpful to weigh things out.

  3. Customer reviews can be a good guide before buying an item online. Search about the product also in the internet, note the pros and the cons.
