I remember when I was a child, it was like a must to learn how to play the piano. I am not sure if it was because that was what kids would usually be learning at the same age I was or because my mom and his family knew how to play the piano. I have to admit that I really did not like to play the piano but somehow, I had about 5 years of taking piano lessons. I still try to play some old pieces that I used to play. And now I regret for not taking it seriously because I can now appreciate the beauty of how the piano could make such magical sounds that could send you to a different dimension. Yup! That is how I feel when I hear a beautiful music played on the piano. This reminds me of my uncle and my grandmother who would be almost hammering the keyboards each time they play their concerto.
Nowadays, parents seem to be making their kids learn more than just knowing how to play an instrument. They would also encourage their kids to be active in sports and the arts. Not that there is anything wrong in learning these but somehow, the children might just need to focus on one and be able to excel on it. Having too much may make them feel pressured to learn because they want to please their moms and dads. And instead of mastering a skill or talent, they might just end up unmotivated.
Letting a child learn a lot of things may be helpful. But letting a child learn a lot all at the same time might make the child disinterested because of not being able to be like normal kids as they are forced to be with their piano teacher for 2 hours and then the next day she has to go to her ballet class and then the next day she has to meet with her tennis instructor. Make learning fun, as I would always tell most moms that would seek my help when they ask me about how they should go about in teaching their kids. When a kid is taught in a way which makes him feel like being threatened just to know the ABC’s and 123’s, the child could shut down. And instead of making him excited to go to school and be able to meet new friends, it might just increase his fear of learning.
Learning should be fun for kids. Parent should make their kids feel that learning new things isn’t difficult and that if ever they might not be able to master a skill in a day or two, it is just fine. Introduce things to kids in a way that they would not think that it is a lesson but rather a part of their everyday lives. Forcing something on them could only make them unenthusiastic to discover new things.
