When people think of being compassionate, it may always come in mind that it has something to do with religion but it is not. Being compassionate towards others is like gaining a positive feeling like being a winner in a contest, achieving pleasure on a great holiday spent with family or simply being at peace.
You show compassion to people not only for others to say good things about you but because you feel the satisfaction of being a blessing to others. Simple things like visiting a sick person, consoling a friend who is in grief and extending help to homeless people are just a few which will give you a natural high by reducing your stress level.
I just wonder how some people could be scrooge sometimes. Little things which we can give to others should not be as difficult. What is a piece of bread to be shared to a kid who seemed to have not eaten for days? What is 15 minutes of talk to a friend who might need a shoulder to cry on? Being compassionate to others should not require an appointment, do they?
The greatest effect of being compassionate is that the person becomes to have a better perspective in life, thus become happier compared to people who just thinks that the whole world is about himself and not one else.
“If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.” -Dalai Lama
