It is a common scenario in some offices, public or even private, when there’s so much tension like a volcano about to erupt, due to too much politicking among employees.
Office politics occur when someone who wanted to get a very good image to his/her superior or employer divide and rule the employees. He would get the side of many of his colleagues when he wanted to “topple” down his opponent. They could be aiming for a good position through promotion, or get some good deals out of their work. It could be due to some professional jealousy when one thinks he should be given those perks afforded to his colleague by the company or the office.
In such scenario, backstabbing becomes a common thing. And one could be wise enough to just remain neutral to be safe, because anything you say about one party could be relayed to him and in the end you could get negative feedback from that. There is a saying that silence is golden. So do not just open your mouth and give your opinions, because sometimes they could misinterpret you, though you are just being honest in expressing your thoughts. Just do your work well, and let them see that you are very professional in your work and do not engage in such unhealthy office practices.
